Our Story

Why three seconds?

I’m a child of Title IX and I've always thought women's sports were shortchanged when it came to access. As a kid it was an injustice I wanted to change. When I became a mother with a daughter born between two boys, I worked harder to get opportunities and access to resources for the kids.

Why three seconds?

I’m a child of Title IX. Title IX, passed in 1972 and implemented in 1975, prohibited sex-based discrimination in schools receiving government funding. For me, as a high school girl, it meant new resources for girls’ sports—a milestone shaped by conversations with my aunt, an incredibly talented athlete. She shared her frustrations with the restrictions in girls’ basketball when she was in high school and college. This included playing on half the court and limited movement rules - most notably players could only take three steps/dribbles and had three seconds before having to shoot or pass the ball. Despite these inequities, she became an All-American Athlete and helped me understand the challenges faced by women in sports.

Over time, the women’s game evolved, though differences remain. I’ve continued learning about the sport through my kids, two sons and a daughter, all basketball players. My daughter even played in college, benefiting from opportunities that Title IX helped create. Today, women’s sports are gaining attention and momentum—a reflection of progress and an exciting glimpse of the future.

Three seconds to shoot. Can you imagine having to play the game that way?
